The Red River Gorge, located in east-central Kentucky, is arguably the best sport climbing area in the nation. It is certainly the most visited. The vast number of bolted routes on overhanging, pocketed sandstone draws climbers from all over the world. The Red hosts some 1,000 sport routes, and nearly 900 trad routes.
Climbers usually camp at Miguel's Pizza, a pizza and rock climbing shop centrally located to the 15+ individual crags. There are still many areas not fully developed, and countless crags yet to be discovered.
Season: Fall has the best temps and less rain than the spring.
