Into the Mind of... a Divisionals Competition Routesetter

Photo from Team Urban Core
By Aubrey Wingo

One of the number one questions I hear the most in all my responsibilities at the gym is “How do you set routes?” or “Do you have pre-made paths that you create?” While my own path hasn’t quite been determined, one of my many choices is continue on to become a professional route setter. I was fortunate to be invited as an intern to set this past June at my first USA Climbing sanctioned Divisionals held this year at X-Treme Rock Climbing Gym in Miami, FL. This article will be a first hand look into the chaos of setting a onsight competition and my own personal learning experiences as a route setter and even as a person. If you know nothing about routesetting, hopefully I can clear some things up!

Recaps - Aiguille's 2013 CCS Regional & SCS Local

By Aubrey Wingo

There is nothing that compares to the excitement and motivation that surrounds climbing competitions. They can be chaotic for the parents that watch their children on the edge of their seats and the staff members frantically running around making sure there is a judge at all times. For the past three years, Aiguille Rock Climbing Center has taken on the task of hosting not only our annual Sport Climbing Series (SCS) Local Competition, but also the Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS) Regionals competitions. And on April 6th, 2013, yet again, the competitions were a great success.

Every Spring, the anticipation for the rope climbing season builds and builds, and all of Aiguille Rock Climbing Center knows that a competition is coming. On March 31st, Aiguille opened its doors to the 2012 Collegiate Climbing Series Regional Competition and the 2012 Sport Climbing Series Local Competition. Competitors from all over what USA Climbing categorizes as the “Deep South” travel to Longwood in order to climb some of the hardest rope routes that Aiguille has ever set.
