Indoor Cracks

We have noticed that since we are located in an area with no outdoor climbing nearby, not too many of our members seem to be interested in crack climbing. Is this because we simply don't have any to offer? If we had cracks here at Aiguille would you train crack climbing just as you do face climbing?
Here are some photos of gyms around the country who do have cracks. Keeping the new facility in mind, is it something Aiguille should offer?

  1. I don't even know if I'd enjoy crack climbing. I've never gotten the opportunity to try.

  3. I would absolutely like to see crack climbing at the new gym. Having as many types of climbing as possible is always a good thing in my opinion.

  4. same as roller...not to mention since no one has been exposed to it, it could turn people on to different types of climbing

  5. The only bummer thing about it is that there is no variation. Cracks outside can be interesting because there is a variation in the crack (for the most part). From finger locks to hand jams to slopping edges to chicken wings all in the same climb. How could you incorporate crack climbing in a gym so that it wouldn't be mundane?

  6. Is there such a thing as an adjustable crack? And how feasible would that be?

  7. The gym in the first few photos has 13 cracks in just under 250 sq. ft., from 5.8 to 5.13, and have nearly everything from finger cracks, to hand jams and hand stacks, to chimneys and offwidths. The overhung route in photo 2 has a 5.13 finger crack, and to the left of it a 5.13 where you must climb feet first using heel-toe jams and hand stacks!

There are many gyms that have adjustable cracks. Not sure how practical they are. It would be interesting to compare how often people use it compared to a gym like Momentum that has many varying, permanent cracks offered.

  8. it would probably be a real pain.. but if you had a bunch of removable crack features just like the big blocks there would be much more options as to what kind of route it is then if there was one permanent crack.

but me personally, i would love to give crack climbing a try.
